One series I was shocked to see missing from the list is the West’s acclaimed Gachiakuta. It didn’t make the top 10 best-selling manga series or the top 50 best-selling manga volumes, even after the release of its anime adaptation on July 6, 2025. The anime is close to finish airing (or done by the time some of you read this). The manga, serialized since February 2022, currently has 157 chapters and 16 volumes, yet it still hasn’t gained much traction with Japanese fans.

Enjin from Gachiakuta Chapter 42 (corresponding to anime Episode 19).

I was expecting a Demon Slayer Episode 19 style explosion in popularity that would boost sales, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Dandadan, Sakamoto Days, and The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity all saw surges in manga sales following their anime adaptations, but Gachiakuta didn’t experience the same effect. So why aren’t Japanese fans connecting with this series? Was that one fan right for calling Urana’s work “mid”? Was it wise for Urana to respond to that criticism in a way that may have alienated some Japanese manga fans? Or perhaps the graffiti inspired, trash world setting just doesn’t appeal to them?

You’d be surprised at which manga series are considered masterpieces in Japan compared to what kaigai (overseas) anime and manga otaku hold in high regard. For example, in the West, Fullmetal Alchemist is often ranked among the top 10 or even top 5 greatest anime of all time. However, in a Japanese top 100 anime poll conducted by NHK (Nippon Hōsō Kyōkai/日本放送協会)), Japan’s national broadcasting organization, Fullmetal Alchemist is not even ranked in the top 10 or 20. It’s ranked only 27th. Surprisingly, Tiger & Bunny took the first and second spots. Dragon Ball and Naruto didn’t even make the list, while One Piece ranked 72nd. The poll was conducted nearly a decade ago, and some of these series were still ongoing at the time.

But nonetheless, as most Otaku know, sometimes the West's taste doesn't translate to Japan's taste.
