Creator of Gachiakuta, Rei Urana, Urges Fans to Stop Using AI

Updated: Dec 23, 2025

Rei Urana, the acclaimed creator behind the hit manga Gachiakuta, recently spoke out on social media urging fans to stop using artificial intelligence to replicate or manipulate her artwork. On her official X (formerly Twitter) account, Urana wrote:

“Style, lines, colors, design, etc. I have been honing my own weapons for many years. In other words, I would like you to refrain from using my artwork for AI.”

Her statement highlights a growing concern among Japanese artists about the rapid rise of AI-generated content that mimics or directly uses original creative works. Many creators fear that AI tools are blurring the lines between inspiration and appropriation, especially when their art is used to train algorithms without consent.

This comes amid reports that Japan’s government is considering new policies to protect domestic creative industries from foreign exploitation through AI. Officials are said to be exploring measures that would prevent individuals, particularly from outside Japan, from scanning or using Japanese artists’ work to generate new “anime-style” content for commercial use.

Japan’s stance reflects a desire to preserve the cultural and economic integrity of its animation and illustration industries. While the country appreciates international admiration for its art styles, there’s increasing frustration over outsiders profiting from those styles without giving proper credit or compensation to Japanese creators.

Rei Urana’s call echoes that sentiment. Artists like her spend years refining their craft, building distinctive visual identities that define their stories and characters. When AI systems copy those designs or stylistic traits for quick profit or online attention, it diminishes the value of genuine artistry.

Her message serves as both a warning and a reminder: creativity born from dedication cannot be replicated by code.
